My Top 10 Marvel Characters (2013)

Like most things in life, a person's favourite things are constantly evolving, and comic characters are no different. Unlike my previous list, I'm going back to doing a separate Marvel list, simply because I love so damn many of their characters. Also unlike the previous lists, I'm not sorting this one, and just leaving it alphabetic. It's just too hard to say who's better than who... although Moon Knight will always be on top ;)

Beast

Beast has been a favourite since the 90's when I was watching the animated series.

Daredevil

Daredevil is a fairly recent addition. Despite hating the Ben Affleck movie, it made me like the character.

Doctor Strange

Doctor Strange is an anomaly on this list as I generally hate magicians. I think the reason Strange is different it that beneath it all, he is quite a flawed character.

Hellcat

Hellcat is another fairly new discovery for me. I discovered her while researching Hulk and Doctor Strange, and hence, finding The Defenders.

Hulk

Do I really need to say anything about Hulk at this point? :)

Man-Thing

I'm still not entirely sure of Man-Thing's standing in the Marvel Universe, but I've heard that he's returning soon in Savage Wolverine, which is pretty exciting.

Moon Knight

I'm pretty sure everyone is aware of my Moon Knight obsession by now :P

Ms. Marvel

I'm adding Ms. Marvel to this list and not her current moniker, Captain Marvel, as I think her new incarnation is just terrible. I tried reading her latest series, but it was just nowhere near as good as the old Ms. Marvel, I'm sorry to say.

Rachel Grey

Rachel's another new discovery. I first learned of her when reading Wolverine and The X-Men and she's been a favourite ever since.

Spider-Man

This one's pretty obvious, right? :)

My Top 10 Comic Characters (Updated)

Every comic reader has their favourite characters and I think you can tell a lot about a person from who they are. It wasn't long ago that I posted mine, but that was before I started reading DC (when the New 52 came along), so here is the new, updated list:

10. Bleez

I've really been digging the Red Lanterns series, as well as New Guardians, and Bleez stars in both, earning her this placement. If she had stayed one of Atrocitus' mindless thugs, he would be here in her place, but since regaining her mind, I think she has becoming a very cool and compelling character.

9. Man-Thing

Man-Thing was on my last list, but he's slipped a few places simply because he's currently in hibernation and I don't know what they have planned for him in the future. The way he was written in Thunderbolts was super cool, but depending on where they take him next could influence his future placement on the list.

8. Beast

Beast hasn't moved from his place at #8. He's still my favourite X-Man. I haven't particularly liked the way Jason Aaron has been writing him in Wolverine and the X-Men, but it has never been so bad that I lost interest in the character. In fact, I just watched X-Men: Last Stand the other night and thought, as always, that Beast was the best part of the film.

7. Daredevil

Mark Waid has been doing a really great job with Daredevil, cementing his place, once again, at #7 on my list. I really wish a game developer would jump on the license and bring us a video game already. I recently learned of a cancelled game intended for the PS2 that looks like it would have been cool:

6. Flash

Flash has always been one of my favourite characters. I can't believe I ever left him off the last list. I just think that super-speed would be an awesome power to have. From your perspective, you would essentially be slowing down time, and who doesn't need more time in their day-to-day life.

5. Aquaman

A very recent and very surprising addition to the list. Before the New 52, I was of the publicly-shared mindset that Aquaman was a joke--useless out of water, talks to fish, that sort of thing--but now, not only is he one of my favourite characters, his new series is one of my Top 10. I've since checked out some back-issues, but they've got nothing on Geoff Johns' run, so it makes for some hard reading. All I'll say is that I'm glad he doesn't have the water or hook hand any more.

4. Red Hood

Before September, I knew nothing of this character. I'd heard of Jason Todd, but only knew the name and that he was once a Robin. With the combination of his new series and the Under The Red Hood DVD that came with my Arkham City pre-order, he has earned the title of my #1 DC character. He's like a cool Batman (cue fanboy rage).

3. Spider-Man

The Top 3 characters are still the same as before. Spider-Man has always been on the list...

2. Hulk

... as has Hulk.

1. Moon Knight

But #1 still remains one of my most recent discoveries: Moon Knight. He's like a bad-ass Batman (cue even more fanboy rage :P ).

My Top 10 Comics of 2011

As someone who was basically just a Marvel-reader at the end of 2010, the year of 2011 has been a big turning point as Marvel now take up less than half of my pull list. So which Marvel titles remain? Which other titles made the cut? Let's see, shall we...

DC Comics - The New 52 - Week 2...

If you're not aware, DC Comics have recently relaunched their entire line of books, and as someone who has never read any DC before, I thought this would be a good time to jump on-board. Once I started reading them, however, it occurred to me that I might lose track of which ones I do and don't like, so I've decided to do mini-reviews for each as I go.

I've rated each one I've read, given my quick thoughts, and a final verdict. "Subscribe" means I'm on for the ride, "Pull" means I'm not sold and will see how the next issue or two pan out, whereas "Drop" means I have no interest in reading any further issues.
